What is Copper?

Check out my new Blog post  What is Copper?

I am now also blogging at my other sites, here’s the beginning of the post. Please check the above link for the rest of the article! You’ll learn about history of copper, its properties, uses, with samples of art and jewelry.

copperrmain

Copper is an essential mineral found in plant life and in the human body and it is also a metal alloy with a reddish-orange color. The use of copper dates back over 10,000 years. Pure copper is very soft and malleable and is combined with other metals, such as brass and bronze, for use in jewelry and other uses. Copper is used in currency (the U.S. penny), and is used as a heat conductor, in medical instruments, and has been used as a decorative coating of famous gates, such as the Temple of Jerusalem, sculptures, and statues, most notably, The Statue of Liberty, the largest copper statue in the world.

Since 100% of copper can be recycled without any loss of its original mined quality, it is the third most recycled metal. Over 80% of the copper mined since it was discovered thousands of years ago is still in use today. When copper tarnishes, a beautiful green patina covers the piece… Read more

2017 jewelry trends - big necklaces

Statement Necklaces

There is a lot of big and bold going on in the jewelry arena! The first big one is Statement necklaces. Forget the small and simple pendants because it is time for those statement ones. Statement pendants are undoubtedly catchier than the tiny ones. You can try wearing those statement pendants and necklaces if you find that the small ones are boring and do not provide you with the catchy look you need. There are many impressive designs that can increase your beauty and make you catchier on different occasions especially the formal ones.  Instyle magazine forecasts that the big and bold long necklaces are going to replace the choker that  has been popular for a while.

Art Earrings

Third must know – Art earrings with innovative materials, graphic shapes and arty inspiration. Single oversized earrings, earcuffs and single large earrings. Want to look different and attract more attention? Do you love earrings but do not like the idea of wearing them? You can try wearing single earrings to decorate just one ear. It is not the first time for this catchy jewelry trend to appear as it was seen before during the past years and continues to be a big jewelry trend in the next year. art earrings jewelry trend 2017art earrings and single earrings jewelry trend 2017

And if you are not so much for the big huge necklaces try Multilayered necklaces. If you still love those small pendants and do not like the idea of wearing statement necklaces and pendants because they do not suit your personality, then there is no problem. You can wear those necklaces with small pendants but in large number and multiple layers. This means that wearing only one necklace with small pendant is not trendy and multilayered necklaces are the jewelry trend you can opt for to enjoy your small pendants.

Fashion Trends 2017

Greenery - color of the year 2017 greenIt seems that this year is all about green, because it is the selected Pantone color of the year, and also blues in various tones, and, continuing presence of pink (oh I love that!). Artistic patterns are in, as well as geometric, so anything using lots of color variation and random pattern, go for it! I have recently made enameled copper earrings that are “painterly” meaning mixing colors while the enamel is still hot. Wonderful effects can be achieved this way! Also, the trend is towards handmade, instead of diy – interior designers are choosing artisan created items that take skill to make. That’s awesome news for us artisan jewelry makers, too! Anyway, here are some commentary from the fashion gurus.

Pink - another color for the year 2017

IN: “There was an artistically inspired theme across the runways,” says Kate Foley, contributing fashion director of Vestiaire Collective. “From Roksanda and Céline to J.W.Anderson, Proenza Schouler, Marni, Valentino, and many other brands, whether directly inspired by a particular artist’s work, painterly prints, or patterns, strong art references will be here to stay in 2017.”

Trends for 2017 - geometric prints colorful

Designer and stylist Josiah Chua, 28, says the high-end Italian label has been leading the way with the vintage look for the past few seasons and the sentimental style does not appear to be fading.

“Even accessories such as huge rings and necklaces will be on trend too. It is about 1990s fashion as well – cartoon motifs and pop and retro prints.”

Vibrant, geometric prints. Pink, pink pink!

BRIGHT GREEN

Elle says about home decor:

For years, the world has been obsessed with DIYs pulled from Pinterest, Instagram and, of course, Etsy, but designers are now looking toward items that are more “artisan” than “quick and easy”. You’ll see craftsmanship and materials that require you to have a high level of skill to work with them emerge,”. “You’ll see the return of glass blowing, porcelain and even amazing woodworking — not just raw big chunks of recycled wood.

Trail Inspirations in Philadelphia

Philadelphia biking and hiking trails Lorimer Park Pennypack

Finding inspiration on biking trails? Yes, you might think that in the “big city” like Philadelphia you possibly can’t do that, but it’s quite the contrary. Feel the wind in your hair and watch the scenery go by, crossing bridges along the creek and saying hello to various critters in the wild.  I have been enjoying all the trails around here, there is so many to choose from. We are in walking distance to two big parks and they also connect to one another. You can walk or bike and choose the type of trail you prefer, winding in the woods or the newer trails on the old railroad tracks. I was away from here for a few years and I must say I really missed the trails!

Along the new section of trails along the old train tracks

I can begin my walking (or biking) straight from the front door, there is a small distance to go on the sidewalks, but then I get to the city farm that connects to the park (Hey, you can often say hello to the cows there!). I like to go along the creek, see the ducks while I walk, sometimes a turtle, bunny or chipmunk. If on a bike, the trails that follow the old rain tracks are really awesome, the surface is nicely packed, perfect for riding. I like to go across the rail road and watch the commuter train go by (they put nice lights and gates along the trail). The old bridges have now wooden sides and it’s really fun on your bike to see the water. At one point you might even find the snack food truck along the trail, they have nice tables and chairs for you to hang out, too!

Snacks anyone? The food truck is here today, not yet open this early but later it’s snack time! (At this point you are technically in Montgomery county)

Inspiration at Yarn Bombing

Yarn blasting Morris Arboretum Art installation
Yes, I had never heard of it either! I recently visited Morris Arboretum to see their yarn bombing installation on trees (and a few other places). I found it actually really inspiring, was not expecting that at all. Various trees were wrapped in large knitted or crocheted pieces of very colorful yarn creations. In the serene atmosphere of the arboretum it surely made an effect.

It wasn’t only trees, either, I thought the idea of wrapping the wooden doors in machine knit was also rather interesting! Who doesn’t want a door with a knit cover….? Some of the little bridges were also wrapped, all those little tiny spaces! And the Greek looking columns  next to the swan pond, I bet the swans thought it to be fascinating, too…

I found myself going around and around like a little kid. This might cause some inspirational pieces in my jewelry cYarn blasting Morris Arboretumreations!

Making Hearts

Blue enameled copper heart jewelry

I had a big inspiration recently on creating hearts, I guess the concept of Valentine’s Day might have had something to do with it, since you start seeing hearts everywhere! Anyway, I wanted to try some new color combos in my enameling work. I use the torch method so you can’t really do as much detail with the enameling like you can in the kiln because I just dip and sprinkle, but with careful balancing act you can achieve interesting results. It all happens while dangling the piece of copper over the flame, adds to the excitement! And, you always get a unique result, so you won’t get bored with your artisan craft!
I wanted a tonal blue, so I did one with three shades of blue that I like to call “Blue Sky”. I cut the copper shapes from raw copper sheet, I like to use my own stylized heart shape. Made blue earrings to match the necklace, which is new this time, I have rarely done sets before. The other version I wanted to try was using some purple that I haven’t used in a while. I did purple with a blue center, tried to sprinkle an inside shape of a blue heart on the larger purple heart. I really like how it came out, put even some pink in there. Again, did matching earrings with the same purple and blue tones.

My purple and blue heart earrings

Thinking of the fashion trends this year, I did find some really nice heart prints in clothing. Even Pippa Middleton has been wearing a scarf with blue hearts on it! (It was for some good cause, and seems to be sold out.) I found a couple of nice blue heart sweaters also that I thought were really fun. Would go nicely with the blue heart jewelry! Some designers have also made heart handbags this spring. Kate Spade has a lovely clutch type bag that’s really cute. Hearts are red though, not blue. I may have to make myself a blue version!

Inspirations From Spring 2016 Fashion

Spring 2016 colors - rose quartzIn the winter I have more time to follow the fashion trends and I must say this Spring is very promising! The colors are wonderful – blues and pinks – Serenity, Snorkel Blue, Limpet Shell, Rose Quartz, some peach and yellow. So pretty and fantastic! I have a bunch of Rose quartz in my gem bead selection and also the beautiful Blue Chalcedony – it matches perfectly the 2016 fashion color Serenity.
Spring 2016 trends - lavender Rebecca MinkoffI was also browsing some runway showings and saw this gorgeous lavender that Rebecca Minkoff is using, among others. Just so lovely. You almost smell a whiff of spring air when you see that color! Rose quartz, Blue chalcedony, Lavender pearl or Amethyst stone jewelry would match perfectly.

The fashionistas are also saying that extra long earrings are in and even the idea of wearing completely unmatched pairs! Not sure if I want to go there, but it’s an interesting idea.
